I am mystified at the other superlative ratings given the experience we had last night. Let's start with wine: we ordered a bottle. On the way to the table, the teenager carrying the tray dropped two wine glasses which shattered on the floor. Long delay while she cleaned up the mess. THEN she only had two wine glasses left for our group of four and said there were no more wine glasses. Really? Only two wine glasses in the whole restaurant? So two of us got to drink out of water tumblers. The Mediterranean salad was topped with green olives instead of dark, and the greens were bagged Spring Greens from the supermarket. Nothing remarkable here. Steak and Frites were tasty as was the side of Bearnaise sauce. If only all six entrees for our table hadn't arrived stone cold. One of my pet peeves is having to bid on my dinner when the addled server stands at the end of the table and says, "Now who had the steak?" Is it such an impossible task to note who had what on the ticket so the auction can be avoided? Mocha Cake for dessert was probably good.....last week. It was so stale it sharded into crumbs when touched by a fork. I suggested carbon dating to determine its true age. Finally, the ultimate error: the "server" rang the wrong credit card with the wrong ticket. The couple with the $49 tab was charged $164. The foursome with the $164 tab was charged $49. Only our monthly statement will reveal if the "server" was unable to unravel this error correctly. We went up to see the celebrated lounge on the second floor. Our group of six sat at a table, waited 15 minutes to be approached, then gave up and went home. Pretty building in desperate need of dining room training and supervision. Total time for simple dinner: Three hours.

What a pleasant surprise. Everyone had a different meal: steak, pork chops, burger and chicken parmigiano (days special). Dame for desserts. Coming back tonight!

Great! The steak was perfect and the burger bacon-y goodness. And the waitress was awesome:) I can't wait to eat there again!

Our first meal at The Copper Penny was a great experience. I enjoyed a burger with a blend of ground beef and bacon and a wonderful Sriracha mayo (dipped the frites in this, too.). My companion had the Chicken Blanquette - what a rockstar dish for the cold months. A warm blanket of creamy, tarragon-infused deliciousness covered incredibly tender chicken and roast vegetables. This was a delicate and balanced dish that still satisfied our desire for comfort food. Add in a wine list that is approachable and still not the same plonk found in the grocery store, and I'm a happy camper!

Classy atmosphere. I had soup and a Caesar salad for lunch and it was excellent. The restaurant was pretty busy and I expected to wait a bit for our food but the service was very prompt. A good experience!

It is always a pleasure to dine at the Copper Penny, housed in a beautiful, historic building in the small town of West Liberty. My lemondrop martini is always perfect, and any selection from the thoughtfully chosen wine list has been most enjoyable. First, I must share with you two things: 1. Steak 2. Frites. The steak always perfectly cooked, handcut fries always crispy and always stand up to an obnoxious dousing in Chef Robert's bernaise. The husband orders it every time we go with the house sriracha (yep, I googled it) mayonnaise, but what does he know about delicious buttery, eggy sauce for fries? I'm an Iowa farm girl, so rarely order pork chops out. Until I tasted the Copper Penny's. How ever they are prepared when you visit, someone at the table must get them and give you a bite. The chops as well as the pork belly appetizer were sourced locally from Mammoth Hills Farm. Wow. Just, wow. I hope creme brulee is on the menu when you go. Because I like goodness in the world, and I want you to experience it too. Whether you're taking in a movie across the street at the historic New Strand or not, the Copper Penny is well worth the drive from Iowa City or Muscatine.

Generally I dine in the Lucky Penny Lounge, upstairs. Excellent bar menu. The stuffed mushrooms are a meal all by themselves. Had the New Years Eve dinner and it was excellent. Well worth a visit and after dinner traipse upstairs and have a drink on the copper penny bar. Nice to be able to get a very good meal and well worth the trip from Iowa City or Muscatine.
